A New Stone Age site is thought to be located east of the Visitors’ Centre and north of Mugdock Castle. It is believed to date from 4,000 – 2,000 BC. Little is known of its history.

A Bronze Age farm is located near the summit of the grassy extension in the West Car Park and south of the weather station. There are three buildings - a house, a byre and a barn. A wooden palisade surrounding the farm is believed to date from the period 1,800 – 800 BC.

An Iron Age fortified site is located at the Gallow Hill, south west of the Visitors’ Centre in the vicinity of the barbeque site. It was of a considerable size.

Traces of two rectangular huts have been found and there are thought to be three sets of ramparts. Work on the site appears to have begun in the Iron Age (800 BC – 200 AD) and continued into the Dark Ages (200 AD – 900 AD). It is not known whether the site was a village or a hill fort.
